Frieza was way stronger than literally all of the Z fighters, and it felt like it too! He would ultimately trump anything our heroes threw at him. Jiren did the same thing, but here's the difference. Frieza was shown in visible pain several times. He was shown visibly struggling against his current opponent, which would cause him to up his power more to compensate. The hope that he could eventually be defeated is never completely gone, even if it waned at times.

Now maybe this is just me, but at some point, I lost hope that Goku would actually defeat Jiren solo. Jiren was so powerful, so beyond any individual character, I just assumed that it would require the entire team to take him down in a concentrated effort.
